Staying Stylish in Suburbia

Magnetic Chalkboard Wall

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

We have had a tough time picking out the right paint colors for our new house. So much so in fact that we are re-doing one of the rooms after the color wasn't quite what we had envisioned. Luckily, that was not the case with our latest chalk board wall project. In fact I couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out. I knew that I wanted to do the chalk board wall all along. It just seemed like such a great way to allow Esmae to literally draw on the walls. I also like having a space that I can use to switch out quotes or write out recipes or reminders, not to mention the usefulness it has for my blog posts. B agreed and was the one that then suggested we take it a step further by making it magnetic wall as well. Esmae has been bringing home lots of her artwork from preschool and it seemed like the perfect solution for displaying and rotating out her creations.

How it's done

The first thing we did was tape off the wall using painters tape.

There were light switches and an outlet on the wall so we had to turn the electricity off in order to remove the covers.

Next we applied three coats of the magnetic paint. Letting each coat dry before applying the next.

Followed by two coats of the chalkboard paint.

After everything was dry I primed the entire board by going over it with the side of a piece of white chalk before rubbing over the entire wall with a cloth. This was to ensure that whatever we drew would erase easily instead of sticking around forever.

We replaced the white light switches and outlets with black ones.

I hung Esmae's artwork using the magnets.

And when she came downstairs from her nap she discovered the wall complete and ready for her to start playing with. I think her face says it all!

I just keep imagining how cool it will look once we get those kitchen cabinets painted white. One project at a time though.

So what do you think? Would you ever consider doing something like this inside your house?
